British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
