The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
