Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
