Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
